You log into your business email like you do every morning, coffee in hand. There's the usual stuff in your inbox, along with a new message from a potential client who has contacted you about booking a newborn session. She doesn't say much other than her due date and that she's interested in a session. You know the next step is to respond, but you sit there blankly staring at your monitor not knowing what to write. Or wondering if you should pick up the phone and call instead, but then, what would you say? You type up something quickly and send it, but then you never hear back. So now you sit there wondering what went wrong. Was it something you said or didn't say? Maybe you should have called after all. Were you professional enough? And so on. Sound familiar?
Trust me, I know the feeling. I've been there too. In the past four years as a photographer, I have learned a few secrets to the business side of things. There is an art to winning a potential client over and that is to be both personable and professional! But that's not possible to do through email... or is it? Actually, it is. The key is to come across as an actual genuine person, not just someone wanting to collect payment for services. At the same time, you must answer questions that the potential client doesn't even realize they have, before they ask. You are the professional, they are coming to you for your knowledge, and you must gain their trust enough that they decide to invest in you without really knowing you. Let them know they are not just in good hands, but in expert hands. Finally, wrap up the email with a clear call to action. Don't leave them up in the air wondering what to do next. Let them know they should reply to the email, call, or come in for a consultation or whatever it is, but make it clear.
